คำในภาษาอังกฤษมีมาก จึงเป็นเรื่องยากอย่างหนึ่งสำหรับคนไทยที่ฝึกใช้ภาษาอังกฤษ ตัวอย่าง คำกริยา แปรรูปเป็นคำนามได้ เช่น make เป็น maker หรือ จาก build เป็น builder ยังมีคำกริยาอีกหลายคำที่เปลี่ยนเป็นคำนามด้วยการลงท้ายคำด้วย –er ให้เป็น “คน” แต่ไม่เสมอไป เช่น จาก cook เป็น cooker ซึ่งไม่ได้หมายถึง คนทำอาหาร แต่หมายถึง “หม้อหูงข้าว” cook ยังใช้เป็นคำนามได้ หมายถึง “คนทำอาหาร” ต่างจาก chef ที่หมายถึง “พ่อครัว แม่ครัว ที่ไปล่ำเรียนมา”

อาทิตย์นี้ เราจะฝึกเปลี่ยนคำกริยาเป็นคำนาม ด้วยการใช้ –er ลงท้ายคำ ดังตัวอย่าง

He teaches English. He’s an English teacher.

It opens cans. It’s a can opener.

คำลงท้ายเปลี่ยนหน้าที่ เป็นคำนามด้วยการเติม suffix ต่างๆ เช่น

_ness good - goodness, kind - kindness,

_ity able - ability, capable - capability

_ant assist – assistant, account – accountant

_ing paint – painting, garden – gardening
